3 Types of Insulation to Consider for Your Home

Having proper insulation is important if you want to make sure your home is comfortable and energy-efficient at all times. With different homes having different requirements, however, the best insulation option in walls and around windows will depend on what will address your needs the most.

For unfinished areas, the U.S. Department of Energy recommends the following insulation options:

Blanket Batts and Rolls

Can be made of mineral wool, fiberglass and natural and plastic fibers, this insulation option comes with or without facing, with foil-kraft or kraft paper facing ideal as a vapor barrier. Facing can also be designed to be flame-resistant, which is great in areas where insulation will be exposed, like around replacement windows in basements.

Fiberglass blankets and batts are easy to install and come with R-values between R-2.9 and R-3.8 for every inch of thickness. This means up to 12 inches of the material will need to be installed to get ample insulation. This will take up room, making it disadvantageous for crawl spaces already built.

Rigid Foam or Foam Board

Due to their stiff structure, rigid foam and foam boards can be used on almost any part of the home, including around replacement windows. They are also easy to work with and have higher R-values compared to other insulating options of the same thickness. They, however, can’t be installed to insulate existing walls.

Loose-Fill and Blown-In Insulation

Made up of minute particles of fiber, foam or other materials, this insulation option is blown into spaces so it can be used for crawl spaces, attics, ceilings and walls without much disruption. It can be made using recycled materials, making it a green insulating option, but it can succumb to rot and mold when exposed to a lot of moisture. This can be avoided, however, with the blown-in area being sealed properly.
