The Benefits of Blown-In Insulation
Blown-in insulation is one of the most popular home insulation materials that’s typically used on roofing systems. In today’s post, your local roofing and replacement windows contractor Kroll Construction, shares a closer look at how blown-in insulation works, and what makes it a popular choice for home insulation.
Blown-In Insulation
The term “blown-in” refers to its installation process. Blown-in insulation can be made of specially treated fiberglass, styrofoam pellets or cellulose from recycled paper. The insulation material is fed through a machine that churns and blows insulation into cavities on the attic floor. Dry and loose-fill insulation does not utilize adhesive, and is either left lying on the attic floor exposed to air, or is sealed under floorboards after.
Cellulose insulation is mixed with water before being blown onto the attic floor or under the roof deck. It hardens as it dries, resulting in a texture that’s similar to papier-mâché. Cellulose insulation is treated for fire resistance, as cellulose is a naturally flammable material. Wet insulation offers more flexibility in terms of where it can be installed, and generally costs less, making it the more popular option.
Advantages of Blown-In Insulation
Before blown-in insulation, attic insulation consists of rolls of fiberglass, the same insulation that’s still in use on exterior walls, including areas surrounding windows. Blown-in insulation is ideal for use on horizontal spaces because it stays in place and can be safely installed over pipes and wiring. Unlike roll or board insulation, blown-in insulation fills tight spaces more efficiently, which helps minimize heat leaks.
When installed on attic floors, blown-in insulation complements attic ventilation in keeping it cool during hot days, thus helping prevent damage caused by hot and humid air. Blown-in insulation also helps minimize heat leaks during winter and prevents ice dams and similar winter roofing problems. Cellulose insulation is also ideal if you are considering converting your attic space into a living area.
